August 27 speakers Jane Didear and Gay Patrick of the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) Volunteer and Services described how DISD is adjusting to COCID-19 in the opening of the 2020-21 school year.

Rotary Club of Dallas Uptown, with the help of District 5810 matching grant funds, purchases and distributes over 1700 dictionaries to Uptown Dallas area third grade classes.  In previous years, we delivered the dictionaries and presented them to each school and their students.  This year, suitable adjustments will be made, and the show will go on.  DISD Volunteer Services will help to facilitate the distribution of dictionaries.

The goal of this program is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners by providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each student to use at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn.
